A combination of letters used to uniquely identify a stock or mutual fund listed and traded on an exchange. Stocks listed and traded on U.S. exchanges such as the NYSE have symbols with up to three letters. Stocks listed on the NASDAQ index have four-letter symbols. Symbols with five letters ending in X are used for mutual funds.
