sell order

Specific instructions made by an individual to a broker, bank, market maker, or financial institution to sell a currency, commodity, or security.

When a trader sells a currency pair, they are selling the first currency in the pair (the base currency) and buying the second currency (the counter or quote currency). A trader sells the pair if he believes the base currency will depreciate relative to the quote currency.

For example if a trader sold EURUSD, they believe the US Dollar will increase relative to the Euro.
