quiet period

Time span during which an issuer cannot comment publicly on an initial public offering.

This is also known as a waiting period, during which the issuer is said to be 'in registration.' It is specified by a SEC regulation on promotional publicity and includes electronic communication. Its duration usually ranges between 40 and 90 days. It begins when the issuer hires an underwriter, and ends 25 days after the security begins trading.
