The word macro means large, or relating to an entire system. When pertaining to the economy, macroeconomics studies the overall aspects and workings of a national economy such as total output, economic growth, inflation, unemployment and the interrelationship among diverse economic sectors.

Macro is the opposite of Micro; Accordingly when one refers to macroeconomics it excludes individual economic decisions of companies and industries.
