Direct Stock Purchase Plan

DSP is a commonly used acronym for this term. A DSP is an SEC-regulated program that allows companies to sell shares of stock directly to investors, without the involvement of a broker. Thus, investors avoid paying a commission. DSPs are useful when investing small amounts, since one does not have to be a current shareholder in order to purchase shares. The company does not charge you a commission, but may charge a small fee in order to set up a stock purchase account. Direct Stock Purchase Plans are not related to Directed Share Programs, having the same acronym.
