Demonetization is the withdrawal from circulation of a particular form of currency. This includes either substituting new notes of the same currency, or completely replacing the former currency with the new one.

The EU adoption of the Euro is an example of demonetization. The EU began introducing the Euro into participating nations in January 1, 2002, and on February 28, 2002, the former currencies were no longer recognized as legal tender.
