The term is commonly used to describe a temporary reversal of trend after a period of sustained movement. If prices have risen too quickly a correction will bring the market to more reasonable levels and contribute to a more stable trend. A correction (as opposed to a full reversal or crash) is usually considered beneficial for the long term health of the market.
