contingent remainder

Future property ownership that depends upon the fulfillment of a set of specified conditions.

An example of this might be in the inheritance of a piece of property. For example, a piece of owned property may be bequeathed to a known, live heir. There may also be a provision for the property to be bequeathed to the children of another individual upon the death of the original heir. If these children do not yet exist, the assumption that ultimately they will is an uncertainty, so this inheritance is a contingent remainder.
