capital asset

A tangible asset that is held for a long period of time, not normally bought or sold, and cannot easily be converted into cash.

Also known as a fixed asset. Capital assets may be thought of as property that creates more property. Examples include land, buildings, patents, and machinery/equipment. Inventory and property held for resale are examples of what are not considered capital assets. In terms of taxation, capital assets have a special set of codes.
